What is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional Weight or ‘dim’ weight is the estimated density of a package. Dimensional weight is used to determine the amount of space it will occupy in relation to the actual weight of the piece.

How do I calculate Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying the Length, Width and Height (L x W x H) of each piece/pallet in inches and then dividing by a specific dim factor. For Expedited Ground Shipments, the dim factor is 200. To find your total ‘dim’ weight, multiply the dimensions together (L x W x H) and then divide their total by 200. The remaining figure is referred to as the ‘dim’ weight of the shipment.

Is there more than one Dim Factor?

Dim factors vary based on the specific way your shipment is moving. Please see below for the correct dim factor when calculating Dimensional Weight or ‘dim’ weight:

*For Expedited Ground Shipments, the dim factor is always 200

*For Domestic Air Shipments, the dim factor is always 194

*For International Air Shipments, the dim factor is always 166

What happens if the Dimensional Weight is Greater than the Actual Weight of the shipment?

If the dimensional weight of a shipment is greater than the actual weight, it is customary for carriers to base their shipping costs on the greater of the two numbers. In this instance, if you have a pallet with dimensions of 48 x 40 x 50 which has an actual weight of 150lbs you would be charged for the ‘dim’ weight of 384lbs because it will occupy more space.

Example: (48 x 40 x 50 = 96000. Then divide 96000 by 200 = 384. Dimensional weight is 384lbs.) Please note: Example above is using dim factor for an Expedited Ground shipment.

How does my freight get to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam or the US Virgin Islands since there is water between the US and the Destination?

We use what the industry calls a Multi-Modal service for shipments requiring movement via the Ocean to points such as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. If you select Ocean service to one of these points, we use an LTL carrier or Expedited Ground Carrier to pick up your freight from the Shipper’s location. That carrier then moves it via ground service to one of our many Ocean Provider’s facilities, depending on the ultimate Destination. Once the freight has been delivered to the Ocean Provider, they complete the final leg of movement by transporting your freight via ship to a Port on the Island or Mainland where your Consignee is located.

How many weekly sailings do you have to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico?

For shipments going to Alaska* or Hawaii, our ocean provider has 2 weekly sailings. These ships depart on Wednesday and Friday nights. (excluding holidays) Note*: For shipments going to Southeast Alaska such as Fairbanks, there is 1 weekly sailing only.

For shipments going to Puerto Rico, our ocean provider has 1 weekly sailing that departs each Friday night.

Please note: Shipments must be received at the Ocean Provider’s dock prior to Noon the day before sailing occurs in order to make the next day’s departure.  (Example: Freight must be delivered to ocean provider on Tuesday by Noon in order to sail out on Wednesday night.)

What type of payments do you accept?

Global Source Expedited accepts Visa, Master Card and Discover Card. We also provide terms, upon credit approval of Net 15 Days.
